THE HOT MIKADO
Dates: 31st May - 9th June 2012 at the ADC Theatre, Cambridge
Yet again we are being given a unique challenge - to show that we have the dexterity and skill to present musicals of any known genre as well as those that are buzzing with the thrill of recent success. We have never previously pursued Gilbert and Sullivan, but this is G & S in an exciting, bold and retro adaptation. The well known plot and lyrics are mostly preserved, whilst the hummable music is re-born into the jazz era, along with marvellous theatrical shifts in the production concept.
Adapted by Rob Bowman and David H Bell, the time is 'around' the 1940s in America and the costumes and dance steps reflect this fashionable decade. And, the score, too, uses the harmonies and arrangements popular in that period. With the backing of a six-piece jazz band, the vocal styles travel from swing and hot gospel to blues and torch. Examples of this sizzling musical transformation can be found via the links below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AVHrPAlCcI&feature=related http://www.josef-weinberger.com/musicals/musical/hot-mikado.html Fine opportunities for principals and ensemble to shine, and a flexible cast size from 18 upwards, as the future production team deems appropriate. Please form an orderly queue to take part! Auditions details can be found here:
