Scarlet Pimpernel, 2008Welcome to the Festival Players' website!

Festival Players is a group of Cambridge-based amateur dramatics performers who currently produce one or two musical productions each year. We also stage a variety of workshops, concerts and social events. 'Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' was our highly acclaimed 2009 production, following on from the success of 2008's 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' and 'The Little Shop of Horrors'.

 The Cambridge Festival Players

Originally formed to enter musicals in the Cambridge Festival, the Festival Players sprang into life as an amateur dramatics group in 1973 with a production of 'The Arcadians', an Edwardian musical by Lionel Monckton and Howard Talbot. There followed seven years of Festival Players' entries into the Cambridge Festival, and by 1980, membership had escalated and the Festival Players moved their productions to the Mumford Theatre on the campus of Anglia Polytechnic University.

Throughout their history, the Festival Players have tackled an enormous variety of amateur productions, from favourites such as 'Fiddler on the Roof' and 'Oklahoma!' to a number of exciting and demanding productions, including 'Little Shop of Horrors' (2008), 'Singin' in the Rain' (2000), 'Crazy for You' (2003),'The Scarlet Pimpernel' (2008), and Cambridgeshire premieres of 'Jekyll and Hyde - the musical' (2006) and 'The Witches of Eastwick' (2007), which involved some extremely technical special effects, including exploding banners, self-playing cellos and, of course, flying witches, and our latest production, 'Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street' the technically demanding Sondheim musical, which sold-out completely over a week in advance of curtain-up. The society's next production will be 'Chess', continuing our commitment to stage interesting, new musicals - whatever challenges they may present!

Jekyll and Hyde, 2006

We have been lucky in the last few years to have been graced by a number of talented leads and directors. Our 2008 production of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel ' won a number of accolades, including the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) award for best amateur show in the area. We have also won the Combinations best amateur musical award for a large number of our recent shows. 'The Witches of Eastwick' also boasted three sell-out performances and received rave reviews in a number of local publications.

The Cambridge Festival Players are a lively and dynamic society that has performed a wide variety of modern musicals since its inception. The society currently stages one major amateur musical production a year, but has an active year-round social calendar including concerts, quizzes, workshops and, of course, trips to see both professional and other amateur musicals.

Festival Players is a friendly society of all ages that welcomes new members by open audition. If you are interested in joining the group, or are interested in directing a show, please look at our How to become a Festival Player page and please contact our friendly secretary, Suzanne.

Unique sponsorship and advertising opportunities in central Cambridge

From 1-5 June this summer, we are performing Chess at the ADC Theatre. With that in mind, we have a sponsorship and advertising package (being uploaded to this page imminently!), which we hope you’ll find of interest. The opportunities available range from advertising slots within our programme through to ‘premium sponsor’ level (which includes your logo on the banners we’ll be hanging in East Road and Park Street). The good news is they start at just £50!

Extensive marketing

Our shows are seen by over 1,500 people, with extensive marketing (incorporating details of our sponsors) in the Cambridge press and elsewhere, both in the run-up to show week and after it. What’s more, we’re a registered charity, so any support you us would be greatly received and enable us to continue to play to the local people of Cambridge – an audience local to your own business, and the type of demographic you’ll be looking to target yourselves as summer approaches.

The Producers

Festival Players invite offers of interest to direct ‘The Producers’ in early June 2011 at the ADC Theatre. The musical is adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics by Brooks and music by Mel Brooks and Glen Kelly. As in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. Complications arise when the show unexpectedly turns out to be successful...

If you are interested please contact us via the Contacts page  Closing date is the Wednesday 30th June with presentations made, by arrangement, to the committee in early July.
